A quaint little village at the southern end of Otsego Lake, Cooperstown is home to the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Cooperstown Dreams Park. The population is about 1800 year round, but tourism brings over 10,000 new faces through the area per week. Most businesses in Cooperstown are geared toward tourism.
Cooperstown is Otsego County’s county seat. The Otsego County Courthouse sits on Main St. Within this complex is also the DMV office.
Known for the historic charm, the village’s homes are preserved with much care. There is an apartment complex on Chestnut St, and several multi-family homes throughout the village. The majority of rentals in this area are seasonal due to the tourism.
There is a hospital in the village as well as a grocery store, two pharmacies and a couple of convenience stores. Just south of Cooperstown is a plaza containing another grocery store and a McDonald’s. Along Main and Chestnut Streets are several popular restaurants, including a bakery.
The village of Cooperstown is on the Otsego County Public Transit route as well as the Oneonta Public Transit route. The OPT bus travels from Oneonta to Cooperstown and back every hour throughout the day on weekdays. There is also a bus stop in town for the Greyhound and Trailways Bus services.
There is an elementary school and a high school in the village, and a gym/sports complex just down the road that offers after school care for the area youth.
To the north, along the lake, is The Fenimore Art Museum and the Farmer’s Museum, and further up the lake is the Glimmerglass Opera House. At the northern end of the lake is Glimmerglass State Park for hiking, camping and swimming.
Throughout the summer season there are parades and festivals to enjoy. The highlight of the year is the National Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, which brings people from all over the world. During that weekend the population of Cooperstown swells to an estimated 300,000 people. A very exciting weekend for the locals.
The lake front has a public boat launch for boats and kayaks/canoes. There are docks here, as well as on the western side of the lake at Sam Smith’s Boatyard. This is where the village comes for the 4th of July Fireworks.
Cooperstown boasts several local breweries. One of them is the Ommegang Brewery just outside of town. They host concerts and festivals all summer long.
Between all the hotels and restaurants and the hospital and tourist hotspots there are plenty of jobs in the area. Many of them year round.
